Germany vs Argentina preview

Germany and Argentina will battle it out for a place in the last four of the Davis Cup Finals.
Germany has yet to win the Davis Cup since their successful runs in 1988, 1989, and 1993. They will enter Bologna with a strong lineup, led by Alexander Zverev, Yannick Hanfmann, and Jan-Lennard Struff.
Hanfmann was the star of the show in the qualifiers, helping his country with clinical performances against Israel and Japan. The Germans defeated Israel 3-1 and eliminated Japan 3-0 in the qualifiers.
Meanwhile, Argentina won the Davis Cup most recently in 2016. Their squad includes a good balance between youngsters and established players. World No. 21 Francisco Cerundolo will lead the line alongside Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Horacio Zeballos, and Andres Molteni this year.
#1. Alexander Zverev vs Francisco Cerundolo
First up, Alexander Zverev will begin proceedings against Francisco Cerundolo. The Argentine leads the head-to-head 3-1, but lost to Zverev a few months ago in Toronto.
Zverev couldn't make an impact at the Majors, but captured the title in Munich this year. He also secured runner-up finishes in Melbourne, Stuttgart, and Vienna. Cerundolo, on the other hand, reached the finals in Buenos Aires. Apart from that, he hasn't achieved a notable result on tour.
Interestingly, Cerundolo has never beaten Zverev on hard courts. All three of his victories against the German have been on clay.
#2. Jan-Lennard Struff vs Tomas Martin Etcheverry

Next up, Jan Lennard Struff will take on Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the second singles encounter.
Struff has had a decent season so far. Apart from a fourth-round appearance in New York, he reached the quarterfinals in Almaty, Kitzbuhel, and Marseille. The German will enter Bologna after a title-winning run in the Lyon Challenger.
Meanwhile, Tomas Martin Etcheverry has tried to raise his level in 2025. He reached the quarterfinals in Hangzhou and Stockholm in the last few months. The Argentine also reached the third round in Toronto, but lost to his current teammate, Francisco Cerundolo.
Struff leads the head-to-head against Etcheverry 1-0 and defeated him in Gstaad last year. His big serve could cause problems for the Argentine on Thursday.
#3. Kevin Krawietz / Tim Puetz vs. Horacio Zeballos / Andres Molteni
Krawietz and Puetz secured title-winning runs in Halle and Shanghai this year. They also reached the semifinals of the Australian Open but lost to Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten.
Meanwhile, Gonzalez has secured a runner-up finish in Santiago and also reached the quarterfinals in Miami and Madrid. He has yet to feature with Zeballos as a doubles team this year.
Considering their results and skill level on the hard courts, Krawietz and Puetz will have a slight edge to win this round.

Germany vs Argentina prediction

While the Argentines are known for their resilience and willpower, Germany brings technical ability and strength to the Davis Cup this year. They have more than one match-winner in their squad and will be expected to begin well in the quarterfinals.
The new format forces a doubles encounter only if the first two singles matches are tied at 1-1. While Zverev is most likely to get them on the board, Hanfmann or Struff could fall prey in the second encounter.
Even if the Argentines force a tie-breaker, Krawietz and Puetz possess the composure to get them home. The Argentines will be the underdogs in this bout and are most likely to be eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Pick: Germany to win 2-1.
