The Pokemon TCG Pocket Mega Rising expansion expanded the title’s roster, introducing tools that keeps the meta fresh. Among the standouts in this release is Melmetal ex, a card that requires energy investment but when ready punishes opponents who fail to keep up with its damage output. Building a deck around it requires a carefully planned, but quite straightforward, deck.
This guide walks through the full deck list and your ideal Melmetal ex game plan.

Best Pokemon TCG Pocket Melmetal ex deck guide: Strategy breakdown

1) Melmetal ex
- HP: 170
- Move 1: Headbutt - 80 Damage for 2 Metal and 1 Colorless Energy
- Move 2: Metal Arms - 100+ Damage for 3 Metal and 1 Colorless Energy
- Move 2 Effect: Does an extra 50 damage if it has a Tool attached
- Retreat Cost: 3 Energy
Melmetal ex is the deck’s central core and does a solid 80 damage with the three Energy move, Headbutt. With four Energy, this Metal Pokemon’s Metal Arms swings for a better 100 damage, and 150 if it has a Tool equipped. Given how popular Pokemon Tools are in almost every deck, its second attack becomes incredibly reliable, letting you pressure nearly any opposing Pokemon mid- or late-game.
2) Dialga ex
- HP: 150
- Move 1: Metallic Turbo - 30 Damage for 2 Metal Energy
- Move 1 Effect: Lets you move 2 Metal Energy from your Energy Zone to a Benched Pokemon
- Move 2: Heavy Impact - 100 Damage for 2 Metal and Colorless Energy
- Retreat Cost: 2 Energy
Melmetal ex's biggest drawback is its heavy energy requirement. This is where the familiar Dialga ex comes into play. Dialga ex should be your ideal opening card as its Metallic Turbo sets up Melmetal ex in two attacks. Once Dialga accelerates enough energy, you can transition into Melmetal ex as your main attacker or continue with Dialga ex’s Heavy Impact.
3) Magearna
- HP: 90
- Move: Silver Cannon - 40+ Damage for 2 Metal Energy
- Move Effect: Deals 40 extra damage if the opponent’s Active Pokemon has an Ability
- Retreat Cost: 1 Energy
Magearna plays a vital role against specific Pokemon like Pom-Pom Style Oricorio, a common meta pick that blocks damage from ex Pokemon. Since Magearna isn’t an ex, it bypasses that barrier and can one-shot Oricorio, because the Lightning-type bird has an ability.
