Diablo 4’s Silent Chests are random rewards found across Sanctuary, and while they are exceedingly rare, it’s worth it to be able to open them anytime you come across on. The other drawback to them is that they don’t really appear to drop anything better than a regular chest, except occasionally you’ll find better gear, or perhaps cosmetics in them.
That said, if you’re wandering Sanctuary, you may as well have the capacity to open one of these Silent Chests in D4. It’s not at all expensive to crack them open, so why not have the ability to open one or two on your travels? Here’s what you need to know.
Silent Chests in Diablo 4: How to open them
Silent Chests in Diablo 4 are regular treasure chests locked with gold chains, and can only be opened with a Whispering Key. Thankfully, Whispering Keys are incredibly easy to acquire. They can be found at any Purveyor of Curiosities, and only cost 10 Murmuring Obols.

It’s not too hard to get Murmuring Obols, as many of the game’s events reward them. The best places, arguably to get Obols come from The Undercity and The Pit. Your Obols are shared across characters on a server (Seasonal/Eternal), so it’s very easy to pick a few keys up on any given character.
For this reason, I highly recommend just grabbing one or two Whispering Keys, and keeping them on hand. Of course, if you do spot a Silent Chest in the wild in Diablo 4, you can just fast travel to any town with a Purveyor of Curiosities (Kyovashad, for example), buy a key, and head back. Just interact with the chest, and it will open!
In fact, in the current season (Season 11), players can farm even more Murmuring Obols in the Undercity, thanks to the Essence of Anguish Divine Gift. I typically keep one or two keys on me, just in case. These Silent Chests are terribly rare, but I’d rather be able to crack one if I see one.
