The Azerbaijan GP is one of the most awaited and exciting races on the Formula 1 calendar. It is a race held on street circuits, meaning it has its own set of challenges apart from the regular tracks. A street circuit involves a lot of meticulous strategy which takes into account the tire graining and the bumpiness of the track. The Azerbaijan GP in 2023 was the first race to introduce the sprint shootout format. It has seen a different winner in nearly every edition of the event. The Azerbaijan GP in 2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Formula 1 official site calls Baku Street Circuit the Mecca of streamlining cars. It is because of the long straight of Baku which gives ample overtaking opportunities and cars tend to run three in a corner. The Formula 1 race held at Baku Street Circuit witnessed one of the biggest upsets between drivers behind the safety cars. Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton got into hot waters as their car collided during a safety car. The cars run nearly 350 kph as they go braking into Turn 1 for a 90-degree turn.

Azerbaijan Grand Prix History

The first Azerbaijan GP was held during the 2017 Formula 1 season. The race was won by Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo. It was the newest street circuit on the Formula 1 calendar when it was introduced in 2017 and was compared with the likes of Monaco and Singapore. The 2023 Azerbaijan GP and Sprint shootout were both won by Sergio Perez, the only driver to have won the race twice.
