John Cena's illustrious career ended in Washington when Gunther defeated him in the event's main event. However, the audience and several veterans criticized the way The Leader of the Cenation went out, as after not giving up for over two decades, Cena gave up in the end.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Radio, the company was completely blindsided by the amount of heat they faced when John Cena tapped out in his final match. While many expected a negative reaction from the way it was booked, the backlash exceeded its expected projection.

While a majority disagreed with the booking of the match, Gunther became the most hated man in professional wrestling and will continue to dominate competition in the Stamford-based promotion in the coming weeks and months under Triple H's creative regime.

Ahead of his retirement match, The Franchise Player did mention that he signed a new 5-year deal with the company and will remain with them as an ambassador and not a wrestler. Moreover, another report suggests that he has more appearances in store in different capacities, but he won't return to the ring for another match.

While the ending left a bad taste, John Cena is not done with WWE in any capacity, and only time will tell when the Men's Grand Slam Champion will make another appearance for the Stamford-based promotion.
