His return to WWE main roster programming after five years was well-received by many fans. However, online, some people criticized him for returning as Zack Ryder after making a name for himself on the independent scene as Matt Cardona.

People also brought up the fact that he had previously said that "Zack Ryder is done" during his run on the indies. Hence, they were critical of him going back to his old persona. Ryder addressed these comments during an appearance on NotSam Wrestling.

Zack Ryder has a new deal with WWE

After losing to LA Knight, Ryder addressed his future with WWE. He said this might be a one-time return, but he is open to coming back if he gets the call.

While his in-ring future with the promotion is unclear, he does have a deal in place with the sports entertainment giant.

During an appearance on the Major Wrestling Figures podcast, he revealed that he has signed a merchandise deal with WWE. He mentioned it gives the company the rights to use his brand name for action figures and cards.
