Russo was the head writer for WWE during the Attitude Era. He booked some of the most successful angles during the peak of the Monday Night Wars. He also worked with other major promotions like WCW and TNA Wrestling. The veteran writer recently joined Juggalo Championship Wrestling (JCW) as a booker and investor.

During a recent episode of Writing with Russo, the veteran writer stated that he didn't understand why WWE gave scripts to the stars. He reasoned that the company possibly wanted to exercise creative control and regulate every word during a promo. Russo mentioned that real creativity was in giving the star a direction and letting them execute their own promos. He felt there was nothing creative in handing out a piece of paper with some words for every wrestler to memorize.

"Outside of control, I don't know why you would want to give somebody a piece of paper and tell them to memorize it. This is exactly how we want the promo because they're not trained actors, so it's going to come across exactly like it's memorized. I don't understand that where you say, curb your enthusiasm. This is the scene, this is what we're talking about, go. That's creative. Handing somebody a script and telling them to memorize it is not creative," Russo said.
