Vince McMahon was the driving force behind making WWE a global phenomenon. He made the wrestling promotion a sports entertainment juggernaut. McMahon bought the company from his father back in the 80s. He then went on a nationwide expansion plan. With the advent of cable, Vince McMahon revolutionzed the business. By 2001, he bought out all of his competition and became the single most successful promoter in wrestling history. However, Vince had a stunning downfall in 2024 after he resigned from his role, due to a lawsuit from ex- employee Janel Grant and a Federal investigation. During a recent episode of The Ariel Helwani Show, ex-WWE writer Vince Russo mentioned that Vince McMahon had plans of bringing him back becuase of dwindling viewership. Russo was the head writer during the height of the Attitude Era, and wrote several commercially successful storylines during that time. However, Russo never returned because Mr. McMahon wanted him to audition for the job. The writer made it clear that he would not jump through hoops just to get a job. "The last time we had an email exchange, God, it was probably, I don't know, maybe eight years ago. And it didn't go too well. He was entertaining the fact of bringing me back because the numbers were going down again. And he kind of wanted me to audition for the job. And I'm like, ‘Vince, I think you kind of know what I can do. I think you've seen what I could do. I'm not jumping through hoops.' You can continue going on down the road you're going down."Vince Russo never thought Vince McMahon would leave WWEDuring the same discussion, Russo detailed that the last few years have left him stunned. He reflected on Vince McMahon's downfall, stating that he never thought he would see the 80-year-old ousted from his own company. Russo added that people backstage would often joke that Mr. McMahon would die at his desk, doing what he loved. No one would have anticipated that the series of lawsuits would push the former boss away from the company.
