Russo was the WWE writer during the Attitude Era. He is credited with booking some major storylines during the era which were commercially successful. However, he walked out of the company in 1999 due to personal differences with McMahon and Co.

This week on The Ariel Helwani Show, Russo mentioned that he reached out to Vince McMahon few years ago. However, McMahon wanted him to watch the shows for free and share feedback. The ex-writer made it clear that he would not work for free and the talks broke down. Russo detailed that the last few emails from McMahon were personal and nasty, and he didn't bother responding.

"I actually reached out, but he did get back to me immediately. He wanted me to, watch the shows a month and give him my feedback. I came back with, 'Okay, no problem. And what are you paying me for that month?' And he hit me with, 'Pay you? You should be thrilled to have this kind of opportunity.' And I'm like, 'Vince, I'm not a kid just out of college. I'm not working for free. I'm not watching the shows. If you want to compensate me, no problem. But the days of me doing anything for free are long gone.' I'll be honest, he got pretty nasty to me, and the last email was really nasty. He was hitting me below the belt. And I didn't even answer it."

Vince Russo spoke about his initial fallout with Vince McMahon

During the discussion, Russo also spoke about how he stopped working for the WWE. He recalled that Vince McMahon asked him to put work before his family.

"I would make the same decision today. You don't put work before my family. You don't put your company before my family. And you know what, by doing that and all the hell I went through, I've got three kids that are now old enough to understand, 'Oh my God, Dad walked away at the pinnacle of his career, because we came first.' I am not prouder than anything else in my life than that."

Russo said he was proud of his decision and hoped that his family would understand why he took these steps.
