John Cena's last WWE match takes place next week, but his father, John Cena Sr., criticized the company's choice for his son's final match. Recently, The Franchise Player discussed his relationship with his father and addressed his comments.
John Cena's father was heavily involved in some of his storylines in the mid-2000s, where John Cena Sr. would compete inside the ring and take bumps in the name of professional wrestling. However, he recently stirred the pot when The Franchise Player's father slammed WWE for choosing Gunther as his son's last opponent.
In an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, the 17-time WWE World Champion discussed his relationship with his father. He revealed how the two mended fences as they grew old, and Cena always had an idea of what his father should've been while he was growing up.
"I had such a s**tty relationship with Dad, and just recently we've mended fences, and he's 80, and I'm glad I've done this because I mean, we don't last forever. We're all going in the dirt soon, you know? But I just wanted him to be something else. I always wanted that motherf**ker to change. I wanted him to be something else. And I finally got out of my own way. The hard thing is meeting that guy where he's at. The hard thing is allowing him to be who he is," Cena said.

After he addressed his relationship, Cena commented on his father's recent statement regarding the company's pick. The Men's Grand Slam Champion stated that he loves his father, and the community shouldn't read too much into what he said about the company's pick as his final opponent.
"You're just you, and I love you for you. And man, when we sit, there's some s**t that he'll say that's all f**ked up. You know, he said some s**t yesterday, like, 'I don't think John Cena's last opponent should be. And people listen to him because he's a wrestling fan. He's kind of like the weird subculture zeitgeist. And I want to call my day and be like, 'What the f**k are you doing? But then he's doing what he does. This is him. This is the John [Dad] Cena I love," Cena said.
Why did John Cena Sr. slam WWE's pick?
The Franchise Player's father is not under contract with WWE, nor is he working with the Stamford-based promotion in any capacity. However, he, as a fan, made his voice heard when he was asked about his son's final ever opponent in the company. Speaking on the All Axxess podcast, John Cena Sr. revealed why Gunther shouldn't be his son's last opponent.
The veteran stated that The Ring General doesn't need a rub from his son on his way out as a performer. The two-time World Heavyweight Champion is an established name in the company, and John Cena Sr. thinks a new star would've benefited much more in the spot instead of Gunther.
