John Cena's last-ever opponent was not handpicked, as Gunther won 'The Last Time is Now' tournament and earned the right to face the legendary name in Washington. However, many veterans and fans were disappointed by the winner, as the two didn't have a history or a proper story.

Today, Vince Russo reacted to Jonathan Coachman's take on X/Twitter, where Coachman believed that Gunther shouldn't have been John Cena's final opponent. Russo added that the two-time World Heavyweight Champion lost all credibility when the creative team decided to put Sami Zayn over The Ring General.

"I do COACH!!! When @WWE Creative made the decision to put Sami Zayn over Gunther—-the Gunther character lost all credibility," Russo tweeted on X.

Gunther has also lost to CM Punk and Jey Uso this year.

Ex-WWE star didn't want Gunther as John Cena's final opponent

John Cena's final opponent has been a hot topic, as it was reported months ago that Gunther would be the one. However, fans and veterans weren't into the idea, as many believed The Ring General didn't need to rub from The Franchise Player on his way out.

Moreover, The Leader of The Cenation wanted to put young talent over in his last run, and apart from Dominik Mysterio, no new star got the opportunity to feud with The Never-Seen Seventeen. After Gunther won the tournament, Tom Pestock, fka WWE's Baron Corbin, tweeted his pick.

"I would have like to see [Carmelo Hayes] Melo," Pestock tweeted on X.

The former WWE United States Champion stated that he would prefer SmackDown's Carmelo Hayes as John Cena's last-ever opponent in the Stamford-based promotion, as the two had a very similar rise in the company. Unfortunately, Hayes was eliminated in the tournament by Gunther, and Cena's last match is locked against The Ring General in Washington.
