One of John Cena’s former tag team partners, with whom he had secured the WWE Tag Team Championship once, recently talked about Nexus. The 45-year-old, who was a top member of the stable, has now come forward and shed light on the creative plans WWE had for him and the group that never made it to TV.

David Otunga talked about the heel crew’s abandoned plans on his official YouTube channel’s video titled The Rise and Fall of The Nexus. Otunga said that he was told that he would have a feud with Wade Barrett for the leadership of the group, and he would emerge victorious and kick Barrett out.

“This time, we hadn't specifically been told what the long-term plan was for Nexus. But we were told like broad strokes that basically this was going to build all of us into major superstars going forward. And it was alluded to that eventually Wade and I were going to fight over the group, and I was gonna kick Wade out of the group, lead Nexus. But what it was building to was Wade and I one-on-one because it was gonna circle back to the finale of NXT, where you know he beat me, and I was runner-up."

Otunga discussed where the program was heading before the company changed its plans.

Brock Lesnar's retirement date leaked? Check the details!

"Although we never had a singles match, we had a triple threat. So this was gonna be where I was able to get my revenge, or at least we were gonna have our one-on-one standoff, so we didn't know when that was gonna happen, but it was indicated to me that that was eventually where the story was going.” [1:08 - 2:00]

David Otunga retired from wrestling just five years later in 2015. However, he remained with the company till 2020. Wade Barrett is now a regular commentator in WWE after he hung up his boots in 2016.

Bray Wyatt is also a former NXT member. However, he was known as Husky Harris at the time and had to reinvent his gimmick to get the fanfare he deserved. With three WWE World Titles to his name and a match against The Undertaker, The Eater of Worlds is arguably the most successful original member of the faction.

John Cena had a lengthy program with the faction. He is set to retire from in-ring action next month.

David Otunga could be back in the ring 10 years after his last WWE match

David Otunga recently appeared on TMZ’s Inside The Ring podcast. The 45-year-old talked about a potential return to the ring and said that he would be willing to make a comeback for the right story and the right price.

"Thankfully, I haven't had any [injuries]. But yeah, that's something I would do if the storyline was right, price was right. (...) Hey, if somebody offers me," Otunga said.

Otunga's last match for the promotion took place in July 2015. He lost to R-Truth in a non-televised bout. The two-time WWE Tag Team Champion recently announced that he and his wife are expecting a baby. Otunga shared the good news with fans via his official Instagram account. It will be interesting to see if the former Nexus member steps into the ring again.
