His last year with the company has seen fans and his peers appreciate his contributions to the promotion. Cena has been vocal about pushing the next generation of stars and even visited the Performance Center twice recently.

However, during his time as a top star, he was accused of using his backstage influence on occasions, and former tag team champion David Otunga believes that the Never Seen-17 was the one behind the failure of the popular faction, Nexus.

Led by Wade Barrett, Nexus debuted on RAW in 2010 in chaotic fashion. The bunch of NXT rookies became an overnight sensation after attacking The Last Real Champion and CM Punk as well as the ringside personnel during the segment.

This led to a seven-on-seven tag team match between WWE stars and the faction at SummerSlam. Though the rookies were the hot favorities, the match was ultimately won by Team WWE led by Cena. The Cenation Leader has been accused of changing the original finish on the day, which had the Nexus going over.

David Otunga accused John Cena of using his influence backstage

In an interview on the Muscle Memory podcast, David Otunga revealed that there was tension between John Cena and the Nexus members after the events of SummerSlam 2010.

He then mentioned the reason why WWE never brought the faction back or didn't release the Nexus documentary was due to the pull of the 17-time World Champion.

Notably, the first of Otunga's two tag team championship wins came with John Cena, when the duo beat Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre for the titles.
