Former WWE head writer Vince Russo recently criticized the current state of the company. He spoke about the problems with the creative team under Triple H.

Russo is arguably one of the most polarizing personalities in the wrestling business. The 64-year-old writer was the brains behind some of the most successful WWE storylines during the Attitude Era. However, he could not replicate the same success with WCW, and his writing was seen as one of the factors leading to the company shutting down in 2001.

During a recent episode of The Ariel Helwani Show, the wrestling veteran mentioned that he viewed the current product through a writer's lens. He stated that there were no storylines and characters in WWE. Russo couldn't even recall the last time he enjoyed watching the current product. The former writer pointed out that stars were wrestling each other just to prove they were better or because they bumped into each other in the back. He felt the creative team was making matches without any compelling angles.

"I am a writer. I am looking at this as a writer. So I'm looking for characters, I'm looking for storylines. That's what I'm looking for. Man, it's been much, much longer than that. I can't tell you when I honestly did enjoy the WWE. And I want to be clear, that's my opinion. That's how I look at it. I'm looking at the entertainment aspect. Everything in wrestling is, it's all about the match. Every storyline is oh, I want to wrestle you because I'm better than you or I want to be the next champion. People are bumping into each other in the back and making matches. That's not storytelling. I want storytelling. I want new characters."

Vince Russo still watches WWE

During the conversation, Russo stated that he still watches the product. However, he is planning to stop very soon.

"I keep up to speed with it. But Ariel, you're gonna laugh, but I'm about to hit my 65th birthday. As I hit my 65th birthday, I am not going to sit there every Monday night and every Friday night and watch those shows in their entirety. And you want to know why? I consider myself a casual television viewer. They have not earned my viewership."

Russo stated that he kept in touch with WWE's content to be aware of what they were putting out on their weekly television shows.
