Former WWE head writer Vince Russo recently spoke in detail about Bret Hart's promo skills. The star parted ways with the company in 1997, after the Montreal Screwjob.
The Montreal Screwjob is one of the most infamous incidents in the history of pro wrestling. Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels had real-life heat, and the Hitman did not want to drop the WWE Championship to HBK before leaving for WCW. WWE boss Vince McMahon and some of his crew members decided to end the match the moment Shawn caught his opponent in a submission hold and crowned him the new champion. Hart left the company after that night, and it took years before the two parties settled their differences.
This week on Writing with Russo, the veteran writer noted that Bret was a terrific wrestler, but great at promos too. He explained that the Hitman's promo skills were often overlooked because of his prowess in the ring. Russo recalled that Hart cut some scathing promos during the USA vs. Canada storyline throughout 1997. The ex-WWE writer felt that Bret Hart would have been a huge part of the program during the Attitude Era had he not left the company.
"Bret was such a great wrestler that his promo side is totally overshadowed. I don't care what anybody says. You go watch the USA vs. Canada stuff, Bret is freaking great. He is great, absolutely without a shadow of a doubt. I wish he were smack dab in the middle of that," Russo said.
Despite his differences with WWE, Bret Hart will go down in history as one of the all-time greats. Apart from being a seven-time World Champion, he is also the only three-time WWE Hall of Famer.
