Gunther is headed to Saturday Night’s Main Event and will retire John Cena on December 13, 2025. Needless to say, several fans would’ve loved to see an iconic rival of Cena to be his final opponent over The Ring General. This has led to fans criticizing the 38-year-old, prompting former WWE Superstar Baron Corbin to speak out.Speaking to the Busten Open Podcast, Bishop Dyer said that he can relate to what Gunther might be going through at the moment. The former United States Champion said he also received a lot of hate for being the man to retire Kurt Angle, even though the WWE Universe clearly wanted John Cena to receive the honor."The last thing I want to do is bag on Gunther for this because it's an awesome opportunity. Look, how many people hated the fact that I retired Kurt Angle? And I get it. I know what Gunther's feeling right now. It's frustrating. Gunther wants to be... He wants everybody to love the fact that he's going to be John's last opponent. The match is going to be awesome! It really will—no doubt in my mind. Gunther is one of the best in-ring performers that is on the roster in WWE. He's unbelievable at what he does. He works at a pace that'll be great for John."Vouching for The Ring General, Dyer said that he will deliver an excellent match and is one of the best in-ring performers. He noted that it may not carry the emotion of the John Cena versus AJ Styles match, but it would still be a worthy fight."We're not going to get crazy off the top stuff. We're not going to get an AJ Styles-type match, but I feel bad for Gunther because he's catching a lot of flak that is undeserving, the same way I did. They wanted Cena to be Kurt's last opponent. I did too; that would have been awesome to watch. It was their first match, whatever. I got the opportunity, and I will cherish that for the rest of my life, as will Gunther, but I just think that, and like some other people, for mine, somebody else could have been a better fit."The Austrian won the Last Time is Now Tournament to earn the chance to retire John Cena. He defeated LA Knight in the final round via submission. He has also threatened The Franchise Player, saying he will make him tap out and go against his motto of ‘Never Give Up.’Bully Ray is on board with Triple H’s decision to pick Gunther as John Cena’s final opponentSpeaking on the Busted Open Podcast on December 9, 2025, Bully Ray supported Triple H and WWE for choosing The Ring General as the man to retire John Cena. He noted that fans should know that this is how the business is run.Instead of just giving The Never Seen 17 a big match, he said that WWE is trying to build and put over two of its stars, thus killing two birds with one stone.“Sometimes it's predictable because that's the business. They have plans for Dominik Mysterio. They have plans for Gunther. That's why they did this. They see the money in Dom. They see the money in Gunther. That's why this is all done. And oh, by the way, why are things done? Hopefully, you understand why Brock Lesnar killed John Cena. Because it's all for somebody in the future, and that guy is Gunther. You pick the business at hand, and you go with it. This wasn't about one John. It wasn't about one person. It was about two. They're using John Cena to make two major stars. One was in the tournament, one was out of the tournament. Only one person can win." John Cena managed to become a Grand Slam Champion by defeating Dominik Mysterio and winning the Intercontinental Championship before dropping the belt back to Dom at the 2025 Survivor Series. It would be interesting to see how his last match unfolds.
