Former WWE World Heavyweight Champion is done with wrestling after being moved to the alumni section

The Saturday Night's Main Event last night ushered in a new era for WWE, as one of the all-time greats sailed off into the sunset. John Cena Sr. has addressed whether his son will step out of retirement.

John Cena capped off his year-long farewell tour last night in Washington, DC. The Never Seen 17 lost to Gunther in the main event of the show, tapping out for the first time in nearly two decades.

A poetic ending to his Hall of Fame-worthy career. The man who preached "Never Give Up" gave up in his final wrestling match. Cena gave back to business and created a megastar on his way out.

But the outcome didn't sit well with the WWE Universe, who booed Triple H when he came out to celebrate with John Cena during the post-match shenanigans.

Speaking to Bill Apter, John Cena Sr. admitted that WWE could have ended things on a different note.

"I think you're not alone, Bill Apter. I think a lot of people feel the same way you do. Again, I think in my own heart, and I always get in trouble when I say things, so why should I stop now, right? I think they could have ended the story in the same way, on a different note."

Regardless of the outcome, he doesn't see his son getting back in the squared circle ever again.

"Never happening [sic] [On if a rematch with Gunther is on the cards]. I gotta tell you. No. I'm going to be right up front with you. My phone has been blowing up, and it's like, 'He's coming back.' Let me tell you something. He left the sneakers. He left the bands. He left the ring. You will never see John Cena in a wrestling ring again."

Did John Cena really retire at WWE Saturday Night's Main Event?

A visibly emotional John Cena left his wrestling boots and armbands on the canvas to confirm his in-ring retirement symbolically.

The Cenation Leader is no longer an active member of the roster, as his WWE profile was moved to the alumni section of the website.

But that doesn't mean Cena will never appear on television again. He stated earlier this year that he would be in a suit for any future appearances following his retirement.

Is he a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame? Only time will tell.
