Several WWE Superstars didn’t pursue pro wrestling as their first career choice, but when they got into the ring, they were loved by professionals and fans. Former Divas Champion Layla El recently shed light on her story, which has a similar hue.

In an interview with Wombreezy, the 48-year-old said that everything started for her from a silly message on MySpace. When she came across a recruiter from WWE who asked her if she wanted to join pro wrestling, El found it hilarious.

“When I moved to Miami, (...) they had a platform out, [a] social media platform, called MySpace (…). I remember I was on there, and there was a lady that [sic] reached out, and she was like, 'We're looking for women,' and I literally laughed it off. I was like, 'What? Wrestling?' I was like, 'No way!'”

Despite this, she chose to say yes anyway. However, she didn’t expect that this would result in her making a career out of it.

Layla El made her first WWE appearance in a backstage segment at the 2006 SummerSlam. The following week on SmackDown, she made her in-ring debut. El is also the winner of the 2006 Diva Search held in August, which allowed her to enter the world of pro wrestling.

Maxxine Dupri talks about her WWE debut

While Layla El didn’t expect to become a wrestler, Maxxine Dupri has been trying hard to secure her place in the industry. The Alpha Academy member won her first title in WWE by defeating Becky Lynch for the Women’s Intercontinental Championship on November 17, 2025.

Before starting her feud with The Man, Dupri mostly lost her matches. Despite this and being a lower-card wrestler, the 28-year-old gained a lot of fans. Speaking to Huge Pop in an interview, she revealed that she loves it when fans come to her and praise how she pretends not to know how to wrestle.

The Women’s IC Champion said that she thanks fans and humbly says that she is happy they have that opinion. She segued into talking about her in-ring debut on RAW in July 2023, where, instead of maintaining her composure, her body went into survival mode.

Dupri disclosed that she felt the urge to throw up and completely blacked out when she was in the ring. She also said that she wishes she could do better in several of her previous matches. However, the Alpha Academy member added that she is happy regardless and cherishes her journey in WWE.
