WWE Superstar Chelsea Green recently revealed that she was entirely in the dark about the return of a former Intercontinental Champion. The Hot Mess stated that, despite being among those pushing for the return of her husband, Matt Cardona, she didn’t know it was actually happening.

Speaking in an interview with Adrian Hernandez on the Unlikely podcast, the two-time Women’s United States Champion said that this was how the pro wrestling world and WWE worked. Green noted that talks on these matters can take anywhere from 24 hours to several months.

“It can be in talks for months, or it can be in talks for 24 hours. Either way, when they call you, you pick up the phone, and then you get on a plane. And it’s the same with Ethan Paige coming to SmackDown. Ethan found out that day, the day of Smackdown, that he needed to fly in. And he literally had enough time to gather his suit and come. That was the same with Matt. Although it was — you know, the day before we got the flights, he was coming. We figured it out last minute, he was coming.”

Chelsea Green said that Matt Cardona had always been in contact with WWE since his exit from the company. The Hot Mess also added that the return of Zack Ryder was the result of her, Cardona, and John Cena pestering Triple H about it.

Chelsea Green on embracing the tag of a diva

Chelsea Green was also asked about the makeover of the women’s division in WWE and the renaissance of the Divas era by Hernandez. The AAA Mixed Tag Team Champion said that she is proud of the way things have changed, but she isn’t allergic to the label of divas.

Moreover, she doesn’t like the fact that she gets booed for wanting to be a WWE diva herself.

“When I first started wrestling, I was booed for wanting to be a diva. And I realized, ‘Naah, I’m going to embrace it.’ I’m going to embrace it because I got into this because I loved Kelly Kelly, who I think is the ultimate diva. I think Nikki Bella is the perfect example of, you know, she was the ultimate diva, and she also embraced being a WWE Superstar, period."

Chelsea Green said that female pro wrestlers can be girly and glamorous and still perform at the highest level in the ring.

"I love Tiffany Stratton. I think Tiffany is the perfect example. Maxxine and I talk about this. You can wear pink, you can be sparkly, you can be girly, you can care about your nails and your lashes and your tan and your hair, and you can still kick a** and be the best wrestler in the world. So why are we putting people in boxes? Stop caring that I label myself a diva; like, seriously, stop caring. I am allowed to call myself a diva and still go out there and perform at the level that Pentagon is performing at.”

Chelsea Green is a dual champion in WWE right now and began her second run as the Women’s United States Champion on the November 7, 2025, episode of SmackDown. The 34-year-old was also the inaugural holder of the Women’s US Title.
