John Cena is set to draw the curtains on his legendary WWE career tonight at Saturday Night's Main Event. In his final match, Cena will face Gunther, who won the Last Time is Now Tournament to earn a shot at the 17-time world champion. While it was clear what Cena was going to do at Saturday Night's Main Event months ago, there was a chance it could have been ruined due to a peculiar decision. The former WWE Champion had announced well in advance that the December 13, edition of Saturday Night's Main Event would feature exhibition matches between stars from NXT and the main roster. However, it is being reported that Cena had plans to start the event instead of main-event it. The Franchise Player has opened several shows on his retirement tour, and was seemingly planning to do the same for his final WWE show, possibly allowing the spotlight to go to the younger stars. But, plans have since changed and he is set to close the event. The crowd would have checked out emotionally and mentally after his retirement, and it would have been a disaster for the other matches. It now remains to be seen whether he can overcome Gunther in his final bout. John Cena explains why he only had 36 dates on his retirement tourIn a recent interview with Tom Rinaldi, John Cena revealed that he originally had plans for 200 dates on his retirement tour. However, it was shortened to 36 dates due to WWE's plans: "I wanted to do 200 dates just to say goodbye to everybody. I wanted to try to go everywhere I've been to just say thank you, and WWE came back and said, 'We can only do 36.' And that's when I was like, 'I think I can balance this with some other stuff, are you guys okay with me running in two lanes?' And they said, 'We sure are, we would just want you for this block of time.' So, it worked out great."John Cena also had a detailed pitch for what he wanted to do on his retirement tour, but shelved it since WWE wanted to go in a different direction.
