John Cena is set to bid farewell to in-ring competition at Saturday Night's Main Event XLII, where he will face Gunther in his final match. The Ring General won the Last Time is Now Tournament by beating LA Knight in the final on last week's episode of SmackDown.
The Austrian star has vowed to make Cena tap out in his last match in WWE, something that would send shockwaves throughout the wrestling world if it happened. The Cenation Leader lives by the motto of "Never Give Up" and has inspired many with his values. That said, while The GOAT has been true to himself for a long time, the question is, has he ever tapped out in WWE?
The answer is yes. Before turning into "Super Cena," the 48-year-old played the heel character of the Doctor of Thuganomics, a rapper from West Newbury, Massachusetts, who had no filter. While the John Cena we all know and love preaches Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect, the older version of him didn't shy away from pushing any boundaries.
During this run, Cena suffered multiple defeats by submission. The Last Real Champion has tapped out four times in his career. The first instance took place on an episode of SmackDown in July 2002, when he faced Chris Jericho in a singles match.

While Cena won the bout via disqualification after Jericho hit a low blow, Y2J continued to attack The Franchise Player after the match. Jericho locked Cena in his signature Walls of Jericho, as the latter had no choice but to tap out. The 17-time world champion didn't lose by submission, but it was the first time he was seen tapping out, a sight that would become rare to behold later on.
Kurt Angle is another superstar who has made Cena tap out, not once but twice. At No Mercy 2003, Angle and Cena collided in a singles match, which The Olympic Gold Medalist won by making The Last Real Champion give up with the Ankle Lock.
At No Way Out 2004, John Cena faced Kurt Angle and The Big Show in a Triple Threat Match for a shot at the WWE Championship. Angle won the bout by making Cena tap out with the Ankle Lock once again.
The last name on this short list is Chris Benoit, who made John Cena tap out with his Crippler Crossface submission during their singles match during an episode of SmackDown in December 2003.
Will Gunther make John Cena submit in his last match?
After defeating LA Knight in the final, Gunther sent a stern warning to John Cena, claiming he would finally make The GOAT give up in his final match. Since turning into the babyface "Super Cena," the veteran has never tapped out, staying true to his motto of "Never Give Up."
However, The Ring General is known to make his opponents surrender with his sheer physicality. Many superstars have fallen victim to Gunther's vicious sleeper hold. The Austrian has seemingly added another submission to his wide repertoire of finishers after making The Megastar tap out with a new move last Friday.
The former World Heavyweight Champion is a favorite to walk away with a victory this Saturday. However, it remains to be seen if he can make John Cena give up in his final match.
