It is a common practice in WWE to write superstars off television when they are taking time off or are injured. However, many times, the creative team books unconventional angles to do so.

In this listicle, we will look at four times WWE Superstars were written off television in the most bizarre way possible.

#4. Seth Rollins injures Rey Mysterio's eye

Seth Rollins was after Rey Mysterio's eye during their rivalry in 2020. The WWE Hall of Famer had a rough couple of days in May of that year. First, he was thrown off the roof of the company's headquarters by Baron Corbin during the Money in the Bank Ladder Match.

On the following episode of RAW, he teamed up with Aleister Black to face Rollins and Murphy in a tag team match. The Monday Night Messiah looked disturbed throughout the entire bout before finally snapping and attacking The Master of 619.

Rollins took things too far as he shoved Mysterio's eye into the steel steps, causing the veteran to bleed. Rey was sidelined for nearly two months due to this attack.

#3. Elias gets "hit-and-run"

On the May 29, 2020, episode of Friday Night SmackDown, Elias was slated to face AJ Styles in the second round of the Intercontinental Championship tournament. However, before the show, the star was injured in a "hit-and-run" incident, forcing him to be sidelined for months.

Jeff Hardy was initially blamed for the accident before Sheamus was revealed as the actual culprit. Elias was written off TV due to a real-life pectoral injury he had suffered that required surgery.

#2. Dolph Ziggler vacates the WWE United States Championship

Dolph Ziggler defeated Baron Corbin and Bobby Roode in a Triple Threat Match to win the United States Championship at WWE Clash of Champions 2017. On the following episode of SmackDown, The Showoff cut a shocking promo.

Ziggler talked about how he was unappreciated by the WWE Universe despite his hard work and claimed that fans didn't deserve him. The star left everyone stunned as he left his newly won title in the ring and walked away. Everyone assumed that it would lead to a massive storyline, but Ziggler returned the following month during the Men's Royal Rumble Match, leaving fans confused.

#1. John Cena gets attacked at a club

On the October 7, 2004, episode of WWE SmackDown, Carlito interrupted the then-United States Champion John Cena on his first night on the main roster and went on to defeat The Franchise Player for the title.

After Cena lost the US Title, it was revealed that he would be out of action indefinitely, as he was involved in a melee at a club, where he sustained a punctured kidney.

Carlito was initially blamed for the incident, but he denied any involvement. However, his bodyguard, Jesus, was implied to be the attacker later on. This was used to write The GOAT off TV, so he could film The Marine.
