John Cena is all geared up for the final match of his WWE career. The Final Testament Player had a decent run in his retirement tour, in which he turned heel, won the WWE Championship, lost it at SummerSlam, and competed against some of the big names in the promotion.
However, Cena's last battle is also expected to be a tough one. It's against one of the best performers in WWE--The Ring General, Gunther. The Austrian Scion is known for his tough sleeper lock, which either forces opponents to tap out or they pass out if they don't give up.
At the same time, John Cena is also one of the toughest wrestlers inside the squared circle. In his entire 23-year career in WWE, The Leader of Cenation has only tapped out four times during a wrestling match, and that came against big names in professional wrestling.
In this listicle, we shall discuss three names John Cena tapped out to.
10 Shocking Injuries That Destroyed WWE Stars - Watch Here!
#3 Chris Jericho
The Walls of Jericho once made John Cena tap out. That was in 2003, during a match on Friday Night SmackDown. It was Cena's debut year in WWE, while Jericho was already an established name. We had a rookie John Cena then, who was still struggling to secure a place in the roster. However, Cena later managed to beat Chris Jericho at WWE Vengeance (now defunct PLE).
Apart from that, Cena recently paid a surprising tribute to Chris Jericho during a match with AJ Styles at the Crown Jewel PLE. Jericho is no longer part of WWE and has been working with All Elite Wrestling since 2018. There are, although rumors of him returning on December 13, during Cena's last match with Gunther. His contract with AEW is expected to expire by the end of this year, and he may drop in at SNME this month.
#2 Chris Benoit
Late WWE superstar Chris Benoit also made Cena tap out. It was the devastating Crippler Crossface, which left Cena helpless. The match took place on SmackDown in 2003. Cena had already spent a year in the promotion by then, and was doing the Doctor of Thuganomics gimmick.
Moreover, there is a very interesting statistic between Cena and Benoit. The two have faced each other in four singles matches, from 2003-2007, in which Benoit has won three out of four matches. Cena only won the last match, which took place on Monday Night RAW on March 19, 2007. Cena lost the other two matches by pinfall, while one match ended after him tapping out.
#1 WWE Hall of Famer, Kurt Angle
Kurt Angle would go down as the only wrestler who made Cena tap out not once but twice in his WWE career. The first match in which Cena tapped out to the Angle Lock took place at WWE No Mercy in 2003. The second match in which Cena lost happened at WWE No Way Out in 2004.
In fact, Cena and Kurt Angle also share a unique relationship in WWE. The Hall of Famer was the first opponent against whom John Cena got inside the wrestling ring in a televised match. The match took place on SmackDown in 2002. Angle had issued an open challenge to any superstar in the locker room, and it was John Cena who came out. Cena lost the bout, fair and square.
Interestingly, years later, in 2017, Cena also inducted Angle into the Hall of Fame. It will be interesting to see if the 56-year-old legend will be there at WWE SNME for John Cena's last match.
