Ricky Saints surprisingly lost the WWE NXT Championship to Oba Femi at the NXT Deadline event on December 6, 2025. It was a surprising booking by WWE, as Ricky won the title two months back from Femi at NXT No Mercy. He was expected to retain the title, while Oba Femi was expected to move to the main roster after losing this bout.

However, the creative team of WWE, for reasons known only to them, decided to hand over the title back to Femi. The two superstars shook hands after this bout, and it now appears that the Absolute One won't be challenging for the NXT Title again.

In this listicle, we will discuss three reasons why WWE took the NXT Championship off Ricky Saints.

#3 Oba Femi couldn’t afford another loss at the hands of Ricky Saints

One possible reason why Ricky Saints lost the bout to Oba Femi is that one more loss at the hands of Ricky would have severely hit the Nigerian star's credibility in WWE. Oba Femi is viewed as a future main event superstar on the main roster. He has everything it takes to become a top superstar in the company.

The company might have delayed his main roster call-up with this title win, but the creative team still views him as the top star on NXT. He is expected to make waves on the main roster, and therefore, to project him strongly, the promotion booked him to win the title once again.

#2 Ricky Saints could be heading to the main roster

Another reason why Ricky Saints was probably booked to lose the match against Femi could be that the company might move the 35-year-old superstar to the main roster. It's almost certain that Saints won't be going for a rematch against Femi now. He had earlier won the NXT North American Championship as well, so there's no reason for him to stay on the black and silver brand anymore.

He could be moved to the main roster be introduced as the fourth member of Paul Heyman's heel stable, The Vision. In fact, Ricky Saints has been rumored for a long time as the next member of The Vision.

He could be revealed as the mystery man who took out CM Punk in the Survivor Series: WarGames match. There's still suspense surrounding who the mystery man could be, and on this week's episode of Monday Night RAW, Heyman could reveal Ricky Saints as the man behind the mask.

#1 WWE doesn’t see him as a future star

One last reason why the company took the title off Ricky Saints' shoulders within two months could be that the promotion still doesn't see him as a superstar who could put on a good match with a main roster superstar.

The winner of the match between Oba Femi and Ricky Saints was supposed to face Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes at WWE SNME on December 13, 2025. Maybe the creative team didn't want Ricky Saints to go against Cody Rhodes and wanted to pit Oba Femi against The American Nightmare. Maybe Ricky Saints will be allowed more time on the NXT brand to groom himself before his main roster debut.

It now remains to be seen how the company books Oba Femi's match against The American Nightmare at SNME next week.
