Randy Orton has been missing from WWE programming for months. The Viper was advertised for the December 5 edition of WWE SmackDown, but no-showed at the event.

Usually, when stars are officially advertised for shows, they make an appearance in some capacity, even if it is a backstage segment. As a result, it was quite surprising when there was no sign of the former WWE Champion on the show.

Amid his continued absence, here are three possible reasons why Orton could have missed SmackDown this week.

3. WWE could be saving Randy Orton for the Royal Rumble

Randy Orton was last seen in WWE on the October 3 edition of SmackDown, where he teamed up with Cody Rhodes in a losing effort against Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker. The Viper was pinned by Bronson Reed and has been on a hiatus since then.

Instead of having him return now, WWE could be saving his comeback till the Royal Rumble comes around. The former WWE Champion could come back right before the Royal Rumble to announce himself for the 30-man battle royale, or to challenge Rhodes for the WWE Title at the premium live event.

2. No creative plans in place

One of the main reasons why Randy Orton might not have appeared on the December 5, edition of SmackDown could simply be that the creative had no plans for him. The Vision seems to have finished up their business on the blue brand for the time being, leaving Orton without a proper storyline.

The mid-card has also taken a clear direction, with Ilja Dragunov feuding with Tommaso Ciampa while still having his open challenges every week. It seems unlikely that the creative team will insert the veteran into this developing feud, which leaves him without a clear spot to fit into.

1. Cody Rhodes is busy with Drew McIntyre over the WWE Title

There was a lot of speculation about whether Rhodes and Drew McIntyre would continue their feud after the champion retained at Saturday Night's Main Event. After Team Vision defeated the babyfaces at Survivor Series, that question seems to have been answered.

This past week on SmackDown, Cody Rhodes attacked McIntyre backstage and effectively renewed their rivalry. While The American Nightmare is booked to face the NXT Champion in an exhibition match at the upcoming Saturday Night's Main Event, he could continue his storyline with McIntyre afterwards.

Randy Orton has been seen eyeing Rhodes' WWE Title on multiple occasions, and a heel turn has long been rumored. Since the Quarterback of WWE is currently feuding with McIntyre, there is no opening for him to return to challenge for the title. It seems likely that The Viper will return to have a program with Rhodes if he retains the title against McIntyre.

Alternatively, he could also cost his former Legacy teammate the title if he chooses to turn heel right after his return. The element of surprise would make the betrayal much more shocking, further explaining why WWE has kept Orton off television.
