At Money in the Bank last year, Cena announced that he would retire from in-ring competition at the end of 2025. After a rollercoaster of a retirement tour, Cena is finally set to ride off into the sunset as a WWE Superstar.

While the legend has put on several incredible matches on his retirement tour, there have also been some where things weren't as great. On that note, here are the three best and worst matches from John Cena's retirement tour.

Worst matches:

3. John Cena vs. R-Truth

After a solid build to a match fans have been wanting to see for ages, John Cena squashed R-Truth at Saturday Night's Main Event on May 24 in under five minutes.

Cena was a heel at the time, and it felt very anticlimactic to have 'Ron Cena' lose so easily, given all the support he was receiving from the fans at the time.

2. John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar

Brock Lesnar returned to WWE for the first time in two years at SummerSlam 2025 after Cena lost the WWE Championship to Cody Rhodes. Lesnar took out the legend with an F-5, renewing their rivalry.

The two faced off in a match at Wrestlepalooza, where Lesnar destroyed Cena. While it surely made The Beast Incarnate look as dominant as ever, it was still a poorly booked match with a rushed buildup. The fact that Cena never tried to avenge the one-sided defeat made it feel even more out of place.

1. John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes - WrestleMania 41

John Cena's last WrestleMania match ended with him breaking Ric Flair's record to become a 17-time world champion. However, the match itself was a difficult watch.

As a heel, Cena dominated the bout and slowed down the pace a bit too much. But the involvement of Travis Scott when everybody expected The Rock to interfere made it all the more underwhelming. Unlike the Brock Lesnar match, Cena and Rhodes made amends by delivering one of the matches of the year when they clashed at SummerSlam 2025.

Best matches:

3. John Cena vs. Dominik Mysterio - Survivor Series WarGames 2025

In his final match at a premium live event, Cena faced Dominik Mysterio with the Intercontinental Championship on the line. The match featured the return of Liv Morgan and ended with Mysterio regaining the title after pinning Cena.

It was an entertaining bout from start to finish, with great in-ring chemistry between the two. Morgan's return and briefly teasing an alliance with Cena only added to the storytelling.

2. John Cena vs. AJ Styles

Although there was no build for this matchup, it exceeded expectations regardless. Cena and Styles had an incredible rivalry over the WWE Championship in the mid-2010s. The duo revisited their feud with a one-off match, and it was a show of respect between two of pro wrestling's biggest stars.

Styles and Cena tore the house down and showcased their outstanding in-ring skills in Perth, with the bout lasting just under half an hour. The two veterans delivered a masterclass in storytelling through the match, and it was among the best matches of Cena's entire career.

1. John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes - SummerSlam 2025

While Cena and Cody Rhodes could not meet expectations at WrestleMania, they ensured that things were different at SummerSlam. The Never Seen 17 returned to being a babyface right before the premium live event, and it was a clash between two of the biggest fan-favorites in the company.

Rhodes and Cena brawled all around the arena, with many 'hardcore' spots. While Rhodes picked up the win and reclaimed the title in the end, the bout perfectly showcased Cena's capabilities as a performer despite his age.
