With the WNBA and the WNBPA still not coming to terms on a new CBA, the possibility of a WNBA strike or even a lockout remains on the table. Now, a new development has brought the players' association one step closer to this scenario.

In a statement released on Thursday, the WNBPA announced that it had authorized its executive committee "to call a strike when necessary." The statement went on to explain that the impasse in the CBA negotiations has left the WNPBA no other choice.

"Time and again, the players' thoughtful and reasonable approach has been met by the WNBA and its teams with a resistance to change and a recommitment to the draconian provisions that have unfairly restricted players for nearly three decades," the statement read in part.

WNBA insider Annie Costabile went on to clarify that this latest move by the WNBPA is merely one domino that has to fall in order for the first work stoppage in WNBA history to happen.

"This does not mean that the union will call a strike. It is merely a required step in the process," Costabile tweeted. "Per the terms of the extended CBA the union could not strike without first opting out of the extension. Both the WNBPA and the WNBA reserve the right to opt out w. 48 hrs notice."

In recent weeks, the WNBA proposed an economic model that would allow the players to have around 15% of the league's total revenue. However, the union went on to counter with a framework that seeks around 30% of all team and league revenue.

Kelsey Plum and Caitlin Clark comment on CBA situation as WNBA strike looms

Prior to the WNBPA's announcement regarding the possibility of a strike, two WNBA stars publicly commented on the messy situation.

"On the CBA: Kelsey Plum called talks 'a little bit disheartening,' citing 'how far away we are,'" ESPN's Alexa Philippou tweeted last week. "Caitlin Clark said while WNBA players will 'fight for everything we deserve,' they must seek 'compromise on both ends' & 'need to play basketball' next year."

Though Clark has called for "compromise" from the parties involved, it appears that the WNBPA has decided to take a more hardball approach as it has authorized its executive committee to call a strike.
