UConn Women's basketball program paid a huge tribute to Sue Bird on Sunday. They retired the jersey of the Huskies alum and the WNBA legend in a pregame ceremony before securing a 102-35 win over the DePaul Blue Demons.Geno Auriemma gave high praise to his former player in a speech he gave during the ceremony. The legendary basketball coach has played a significant role in Bird's career."The greatest point guard ever in the history of basketball, men's or women's," Auriemma said.Auriemma's words came from his admiration for the WNBA legend. Bird played under the Huskies coach from 1998 to 2002. Under Auriemma's coaching, Bird led UConn to two NCAA championships (2000, 2002).Bird has also won some honorable individual awards during her time UConn. She was named the AP College Player of the Year and Big East Player of the Year in 2002, won the Nancy Lieberman Award three times from 2000-2002, and was announced as Naismith College Player of the Year in 2002.The WNBA legend has played a significant part in elevating the UConn Huskies to the college basketball juggernauts they are today. She has left her mark in college basketball as a player who inspires everyone around her to elevate their game.Sue Bird's number 10 jersey is the third jersey the Huskies have retired to date.
