Despite the depth of the meaning behind the design of the new logo, fans were unhappy, attracting some furious reactions on social media. Reacting to the new logo, one fan was disappointed in the team for not improving upon an already old, bad logo.

"The old one sucked. The new one sucks differently. Also it looks like the M is kneeing someone in the nards."

Phoenix Mercury wanted "evolution" in their new logo

Ahead of the 30th WNBA season, the Phoenix Mercury decided to completely rebrand, unveiling their new logo and even the wordmark. According to Mercury's president Vince Kozar, the franchise was looking for "evolution" and "modernization", but didn't want to completely reinvent.

The Mercury didn't hire big designers to redesign their team's logo, but rather used internal staff, who were deeply connected with the team, to design a new logo, without going too much stray from the original one.

In the primary logo, the letter "M" has been positioned at exactly 19.97 degrees, alluding to the years that the team played its inaugural season. The right corner of "M" pays homage to the geometric rings in the original logo.

The team also put a lot of thought into designing the international logo. The logo has four rings, which is a reference to the rings on the original team logo. The primary logo, placed at the heart of the international logo, separates four rings from the middle, making it a total of eight. It alludes to the Phoenix Mercury being one of the eight original teams in the WNBA.
