Indiana Fever guard Lexie Hull broke her silence on the time DeWanna Bonner abruptly left her team. During the start of the 2025 WNBA season, Bonner suited up for the Fever. She would go on to play nine games with Indiana before suddenly asking to be traded.

Eventually, the Fever waived Bonner's contract, which allowed the Phoenix Mercury to pick her up immediately after. While Bonner made her feelings clear about why she wanted to make the switch, Hull and the other Fever players were genuinely confused.

Lexie Hull mentioned how excited she was to have the veteran on their team. She was looking forward to learning from DeWanna Bonner.

“I was super, super, super excited because finally there's a (player in my position) that I can look up to… I can learn something from her,” Hull says. “And then she randomly leaves, and we're all just kind of like, ‘What happened?’ We were never given an explanation. To have no explanation was really challenging.”

Why did DeWanna Bonner leave the Fever?

When DeWanna Bonner suddenly decided to ask for a trade from the Indiana Fever, it had the entire team questioning what happened. Many speculated that it could be because her partner, Alyssa Thomas, is playing for the Phoenix Mercury. Others assumed that maybe Bonner wasn't happy with her role in Indiana.

However, a week after signing with the Mercury, Bonner explained her side of the story and why she made the decision abruptly. To Bonner, it was more of the familiarity she was longing for.

"I mean it's home," Bonner said. "I know I'm going to get the love, the support. Obviously I know a lot of girls on the team, a lot of ladies on the team. Just excited to be back home, some familiarity around the city and the town. I don't even know, I just got here like yesterday so everything's just kind of sinking in. I just wanted to be back home."

Prior to her most recent stint with the Mercury, DeWanna Bonner started her career in Phoenix and played for 10 seasons before moving to the Connecticut Sun in 2020.
