The Indiana Fever vs Atlanta Dream game highlighted the second matchup of the opening round of the WNBA playoffs on Sunday. Playing without key players, the Fever started the opening quarter with a rusty offense.
However, they picked up quickly in the latter part of the first quarter, finishing with a 21-18 lead. Kelsey Mitchell led her team with nine points. Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray led the Dream with seven and five points, respectively.
The Dream responded in the second quarter and unlocked their offense. Howard opened Atlanta's scoring with a layup. With four minutes remaining in the quarter, the score was tied at 30-30. The Dream then went on a 10-0 run and took a 40-33 lead into halftime.
The Fever were expected to double down on both ends in the third quarter, but the Dream proved too strong defensively. The Fever, behind Kelsey Mitchell, cut the lead to five points before entering the fourth, but the rest of the roster struggled to score.
Atlanta unleashed its offense from the start of the final quarter, going on a 9-0 run in the first two minutes to stretch its lead to 14. With their backs against the wall, the Fever couldn't recover, as the Dream continued to answer every basket.
Atlanta outscored Indiana by seven in the period and secured an 80-68 win in Game 1 of the best-of-three series. The Fever will try to bounce back in Game 2 on Tuesday in Indianapolis.
Allisha Gray and Rhyne Howard led the Dream with 20 points each. Naz Hillmon added 16, while Brionna Jones chipped in 12.
For Indiana, Mitchell carried the load with 27 points. Odyssey Sims was the only other Fever player in double figures with 10 points.
