Fans were surprised when news broke that Sophie Cunningham had joined Project B as its latest WNBA member. The league's official page posted the news on its social media, announcing yet another name from the league, following Nneka Ogwumike, Jewell Loyd, and Cunningham's Indiana Fever teammate Kelsey Mitchell.

Sophie Cunningham provides reasoning behind joining Project B

With the Project B roster expanding, it's seemingly apparent that Sophie Cunningham won't be the last one joining. As part of the big announcement, the planned international women’s basketball league also released a statement from the Indiana Fever player on why she decided to join.

"In women's basketball. Our game is exploding in popularity, and I'm all in on carrying that momentum forward in any way I can. Both at home in the us and beyond."

The upcoming league also released a video of Sophie Cunningham speaking about her new journey.

"I am so thrilled for [Project B], it is giving women's basketball a platform that is much deserving; not only here in the United States, but across the world. So come on this journey with us!"

Cunningham also reacted to an Instagram post by Project B with two fire emojis.

Earlier this month, Cunningham told Front Office Sports that she was open to joining Project B if it offered her "multi-million dollar deals". She has also said in the past that she wanted to buy a house for herself, and with the new league offering deals starting $2 million, it wasn't surprising to see Cunningham joining the roster.
