Hawkeyes coach Jan Jensen said Deal showed flashes of her playmaking ability, though she’s still finding her rhythm at the college level.“She forced it a little bit offensively. She probably could’ve had maybe eight assists, right?” Jensen said (per Daily Iowan). “And I think that’s just a freshman learning how it’s going to roll. But she’s a beautiful passer.”Did Caitlin Clark inspire Addie Deal’s decision to join Iowa?Addie Deal arrived in Iowa City as a five-star recruit, ranked No. 23 nationally by ESPN.com for her versatility as a combo guard. But she said her interest in the Hawkeyes started even before Caitlin Clark became a national sensation.“It was my trainer, and it was before Caitlin Clark’s major popularity,” Deal said (per Hawk Fanatic). “He was like, ‘Addie, you need to watch this team. This style of play suits you so well.’ And so, before Caitlin’s fame is when I started tuning in and then I started talking to them my freshman year, I think.”Now, she’s embracing the program’s strong culture, one that has endured through every era of Iowa women’s basketball, including Clark's.“It was a huge reason of just why I wanted to come here,” she said. “It’s been amazing. Just before Caitlin, during Caitlin, after Caitlin, the culture stayed the same. So I think that’s really special. I don’t think I’ve ever been on a team where we like each other this much. So that’s been really fun.”Iowa officially opens its regular season on Monday with a home game against Southern University at 6:30 p.m.
