On Friday, Mulkey discussed Johnson's 18-point performance in the LSU Tigers' 93-77 win over Lawson's Duke Blue Devils. The Tigers coach said she was happy for Johnson, but she also threw shade at the Devils coach.

"I was happy for Flau’jae,” Mulkey said. “She didn't have a good experience with USA Basketball with Kara this summer, and so she's had this date circled... I was proud of how she handled herself.

"Flau'jae lost a lot of confidence this summer, playing with USA Basketball. And it’s my job when I get her back on campus to bring her back to where she can help us do what we need to do at LSU."

Johnson was one of 12 college basketball players who represented Team USA in the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup in Chile. Kara Lawson coached the squad and led them to a gold medal. However, Johnson did not get much game time, which dealt a blow to her confidence.

During the game against the Devils, Johnson also appeared to chirp at Lawson after draining a difficult bucket.

On Friday, a fan commented on Mulkey's statement, saying the Tigers coach should respect other coaches. However, Johnson's mother appeared to side with Mulkey.

"Don't judge a kid before you know them. Don't let someone's status or NIL earnings dictate their future. Coaches can ruin careers, but expecting kids to just 'get over' the hate isn't fair," Brooks commented in response to the fan.
