Talent management agency Excel Sports, which represents many stars, including Derek Jeter and Caitlin Clark, has reportedly landed a blockbuster deal valued at nearly $1 billion. The move comes after investment banking giant Goldman Sachs is said to have acquired a majority stake in the company.

While details of the acquisition are still under wraps, the agreement was rumored to have taken place last month, with Front Office Sports claiming Goldman Sachs acquired a majority stake in Excel Sports. In a press release on Tuesday, company founder Jeff Schwartz shared his thoughts on the new partnership.

"(Goldman Sachs) is an exceptional partner," Schwartz said. “(They will) provide a powerful platform to accelerate Excel’s expansion and enhance the value we deliver to our clients worldwide.”

Excel Sports boasts a strong portfolio, representing major clients from diverse sporting backgrounds. In addition to Derek Jeter and Caitlin Clark, they also represent Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, Jared Goff and more.

The agency also collaborates with prominent brands such as Goodyear and Under Armour, overseeing sponsorship deals and social media strategies, among other services.

The acquisition by Goldman Sachs is a part of their growing initiative in the sporting sphere. The investment firm launched its Sports Franchise division within Investment Banking in 2023, and the Excel Sports deal is expected to play a key role in driving that growth.

The deal will also see Shamrock Capital exit Excel Sports, with the private equity firm investing in the talent agency in 2020. However, the agreement remains subject to closing conditions, including regulatory approval, and no timeline has been provided for when the transaction will be finalized.

Goldman Sachs' COO once reflected on meeting Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark

Caitlin Clark's influence continues to grow both on and off the court. The Fever star has played a major role in boosting the WNBA’s popularity while also building a strong personal brand.

Her growing influence was best highlighted in April when Goldman Sachs' Chief Operating Officer John Waldron reflected on a meeting with Clark. Sharing a post on LinkedIn about their meeting, Waldron wrote:

"Like so many sports fans, I have been watching the growth of the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association), led in part by Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark ... . It was exciting to welcome Caitlin earlier this week to Goldman Sachs, where my colleague Sara Naison-Tarajano and I hosted a group of our clients for a breakfast discussion about Caitlin’s career both on and off the court."

With Goldman Sachs investing in Caitlin Clark's talent agency, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the two collaborate on future projects.
