In early October 2025, a clip of political commentator and Twitch streamer Hasan "HasanAbi" Piker allegedly shocking his dog, Kaya, went viral online. Since then, netizens have consistently been calling Piker out, and while a majority of the outrage has died down, a "Free Kaya" trend recently started on the internet after a fan caught the streamer in an IRL stream, mentioning the phrase.
The incident took place while HasanAbi visited Ireland. A local intercepted the streamer, claiming to be a fan while asking for a photo. As the photo was being taken, the fan pulled up a meme of Hasan shocking Kaya and said:
"Hey, free Kaya! Free Kaya!"
The streamer remained cordial and told the fan that it was nice to meet them. Later, while at his desktop setup, he suggested that the "Free Kaya" trend stemmed from "psychotic behavior":
"We instantly criticize this sort of stuff, because we all know what goes around, comes around, and there's not a lot of protection against this sort of psychotic behavior. Okay?"
Piker first revealed his dog on April 23, 2023, when she was just seven and a half weeks old. In the same stream, his chatbox helped him come up with the name "Kaya":
"Kaya is what I said I wanted to name my child one day."
What breed is HasanAbi's dog, Kaya?
Initially, when Kaya was first revealed, Piker was unsure of the dog's specific breed:
"We don't know what this puppy's breed is. She is a mastiff breed, possibly a Tibetan mixed with some other stuff."
Later, in May, official DNA test results came through, and the dog was revealed to be 48% Tibetan Mastiff, 28% Saint Bernard, and 24% Chow Chow.
In other news, HasanAbi went viral in November 2025 for telling a long-time viewer to "go die." The streaming community reacted and called for his suspension.
