Felix Kjellberg, aka PewDiePie, revealed that his life of marathon gaming is largely behind him now that he's a father. The YouTube icon is now living in Japan with his wife, Marcia, and their son, Björn. He explained that since becoming a father, his priorities have shifted. And while he occasionally dips his toes into video games, he doesn't think it's a "valuable" way to spend his "limited" time.

He explained in his Kjellberg Mail newsletter, per PC Gamer on November 28, that he is officially done with video games day in and day out after 13 years of being a gamer on YouTube. He said:

"Since becoming a dad, everything does get evaluated differently. Every hour has weight now in a way it didn't before. One of the biggest things I decided to drop was video games. But here's the thing: if I really wanted to, there'd be plenty of time for me to play video games. I've just decided that, if time is limited, I'd rather be doing something else."

That said, he's not entirely cutting off gaming from his current lifestyle. PewDiePie explained that he still plays 30 minutes or so of video games "every now and then." He also hasn't abandoned gaming entirely and backed the Stop Killing Games movement earlier this year, calling out developers. However, he said that "days of logging dozens of hours in one game" are officially behind him.

"I'm in a different mindset where I want to learn": PewDiePie on his shift away from gaming and YouTube

While stepping away from gaming and YouTube is a decision PewDiePie made after fatherhood, being a father was not the only reason he's cut off the two. He said that being preoccupied with video games and YouTube has eaten away at his time to build himself and grow. Now that he's leaving that life behind, he said that he's in a different mindset. He explained:

"Since I've been preoccupied with YouTube and gaming, I haven't actually done much to build myself and grow. Right now, I'm in a different mindset where I want to learn."

And unlike what people assume, that he has an infinite time to pursue new skills and projects, PewDiePie says otherwise. However, he explained that he does use whatever time he has on things that he thinks are "more valuable." And speaking of venturing outside of gaming, one of the things he's been busy with as of late is technology.

Some of the newer interests featured in his vlogs include exploring Linux, building computers, and working with AI. He said in an August 2025 YouTube video titled STOP. Using AI Right now, he's using his computer to fight cancer. He explained:

"Basically: Scientists design protein simulations for disease research and we use our GPUs and crunch the data for them."

He also recently explored self-hosting an AI model, specifically hosting OpenAI's open source "GPT-OSS 120B" model. PewDiePie described the user experience as something that feels exactly like ChatGPT, but "it's fast as f**k."

PewDiePie is no longer among YouTube's top 10 most-subscribed channels as of June 2025.
