Even though NCIS season 23 episode 8 does not give us a traditional "happy ending" reunion between Jimmy and Jessica, it does serve to reinforce their emotional bond with each other. While they did not reconcile during this particular episode, there is a high likelihood of the same happening in future episodes. The clear separation of their unresolved emotions is also demonstrated by the incorporation of a case and the AI assistant chatbot called DAWN.

The character of Jimmy carries the experimental AI chatbot called DAWN in NCIS season 23 episode 8, which serves to show what a typical day looks like for him. Over the course of the day, viewers see Jimmy come to terms with loneliness and discover where he stands emotionally. Meanwhile, Jimmy also listens to Jessica speak to a co-worker.

This conversation causes him to pause for thought. When the hour has ended, he gets the courage to approach Jessica, but instead finds her leaving with Agent Nick Torres. Feeling unsure of himself, he is unable to get his words out and becomes stuck. As a result, the two characters do not have a resolution or a reunion, and remain apart.

The final scene shows the audience that neither of them is lacking in love for each other, but rather it is just a case of two people not being ready due to time, insecurity, and other factors that influence how they feel.

How does the AI chatbot change the team dynamic in NCIS season 23 episode 8?

The introduction of DAWN, the DOJ's new experimental AI chatbot, serves as one of the major subplots of NCIS season 23 episode 8. As the team's assigned tester, Jimmy finds DAWN initially helpful for quickly processing large amounts of evidence and identifying suspects' true identities, thus providing the team with investigative leads faster than any human could.

However, as the investigation continues, the team begins to feel uneasy about DAWN. Unlike humans, DAWN does not possess emotional intelligence. It can analyze and organize data, but it cannot understand the human elements of interrogation, motive, and instinct.

The team also finds it alarming that DAWN can monitor conversations and create psychological profiles of individuals based on statistical information. As a result, by the end of this episode, Jimmy is able to make a compelling case for the importance of human judgment and experience in the investigative process. This episode's key message is that although AI offers assistance, it can never replace humans.

Other major highlights from NCIS season 23 episode 8

In addition to the artificial intelligence experiment and the emotional conflict throughout the episode, NCIS season 23 episode 8 introduces an entirely new criminal case: a man getting shot by the Secret Service outside of the Vice President's residence, resulting in a complex investigation.

A seemingly straightforward case of shooting becomes more convoluted as it unfolds over multiple storylines, involving identity theft, political sensitivity, and new digital evidence created by the AI. However, it is ultimately human intuition and teamwork that solve this case, rather than AI.

The episode ends on an uncertain note, with Jimmy and Jessica's relationship remaining unresolved and the team facing ongoing questions about the balance between AI and human judgment, leaving the future of both their interpersonal dynamics and their approach to investigations open-ended.
