In Maxton Hall - The World Between Us season 2 episode 6, instead of Lydia facing the consequences, Ruby receives all the blame for her and Sutton's actions based on an old photograph taken out of context. The administration at Maxton Hall assumes that Ruby must have been involved in some type of misconduct. She is therefore suspended from the school and is deemed ineligible to take the Oxford scholarship exam.

Ruby has now become the fall girl for a scandal she had nothing to do with, and the finale depicts a significant moment when power and status ultimately take precedence over truth and justice, leaving her future uncertain.

The will reading of Cordelia represents a pivotal moment during the current season of the show and sets into motion the lengths to which Mortimer Beaufort is willing to go in order to maintain power over her estate. James, Lydia, and Ophelia all assumed that Cordelia would leave everything to her children, not to Mortimer, whom she was separated from at the time of her death.

However, they are shocked to learn that Mortimer has received the entire estate. Ophelia and the twins' immediate response is one of doubt, as Cordelia would never have decided to leave the estate to Mortimer, having declared multiple times her disappointment toward him before dying. The inheritance of Mortimer reinforces his influence and power, leaving his children feeling betrayed.

The emotional impact of this scene in Maxton Hall - The World Between Us season 2 episode 6 is not about the money. Rather, it's about the way Mortimer is influencing the lives of his children by severing any connection they may have had with the Beaufort legacy.

The result of Mortimer's actions is to completely alienate his children and cause them to lose faith in their father. This ultimately costs him what he thinks he has gained by keeping them away from the money.

Ruby’s pursuit of an Oxford education has been her priority in every aspect of her academic pursuits. In Maxton Hall - The World Between Us season 2 episode 6, she prepares to take her first step toward achieving that goal. However, all of her hopes are dashed as Mortimer uses his influence to methodically eliminate every chance she has worked so hard to achieve.

While Ruby is preparing for her scholarship, Mortimer coerces many influential people, including Alice Campbell, into withdrawing their support for her. He states that if the money goes to Ruby, it cannot be allocated to other students who receive funding from Beaufort. Although James attempts to advocate on behalf of Ruby, his efforts are dismissed because of his father's influence and network.

The situation only continues to worsen when a false photograph of Ruby and Professor Sutton is sent to Headmaster Lexington just moments before her scholarship examination. The misleading photograph leads to her immediate suspension and disqualification from taking the exam. Ruby gets no opportunity to explain the situation, thus resulting in the collapse of her future in an instant.

Mortimer's behavior toward Ruby and her family is driven by a desire for vengeance and a need to control others. Following his inability to get James and Lydia to remain loyal to him, he takes out his frustration on the individual he perceives to be a symbolic threat to his authority: Ruby.

Her suspension is just one way that Mortimer seeks revenge on her. He also dismantles Ruby's financial security by buying out her parents’ bakery, effectively cutting off their source of income and leaving them with no stability. Mortimer’s actions toward her are driven by the need to destroy her to regain the power and control he believes he once had over James and Lydia.

Ruby represents independence, merit, and hope for change, all qualities that directly contradict Mortimer’s worldview. By eliminating her chance for a better future, Mortimer is sending Ruby and the rest of the family a message that defiance has consequences.

By the end of Maxton Hall - The World Between Us season 2 episode 6, Mortimer's attempt at revenge ultimately demonstrates his insecurity rather than his ability to earn the loyalty and respect of his children.
