20/20 case details
The story focuses on 24-year-old 2nd Lt. Holley Wimunc, a maternity ward nurse at Fort Bragg. In July 2008, coworkers visited her Fayetteville, North Carolina, apartment after she missed a shift. They reportedly found smoke damage and signs of an intentionally set fire. Knives were missing from a kitchen block. A piece of bedroom carpet had been cut out. Holley’s car remained outside. She was gone.

At the time, Fayetteville was already tense. Another soldier, Sgt. Megan Touma had been found dead in a hotel. Letters referencing the Zodiac cases stirred anxiety and talk of a serial threat. Investigators kept that angle open, while also examining relationships and recent disputes linked to Holley’s home life.

Witness accounts soon pointed to a man in dark clothing leaving Holley’s complex in a black pickup. NCIS and local detectives interviewed friends, colleagues, and family. A restraining order from earlier that spring was part of the file, and there were claims of harassment and domestic trouble. Some details remained unconfirmed at first, so the team pressed for physical evidence.
A break arrived outside town. Forestry workers reported a suspicious burn area near Sneads Ferry, close to Camp Lejeune. A shallow grave was located. Remains were recovered and later identified as Holley. Tools found at the scene reportedly matched knives missing from her apartment, joining the two locations in one chain of evidence.
Per CBS News, Holley’s husband, Marine Cpl. John Wimunc was arrested and later pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, while fellow Marine Kyle Alden pleaded guilty as an accessory after the fact and to arson counts.
The episode brings viewers into interviews with agents and reporters who walked the sites and handled the case materials. It also includes the father’s fight to learn what happened and why. Records outline a timeline that begins with a missed shift at a military hospital and ends with a graveside recovery many miles away.
