Case overview on 20/20: Debbie Dorian

Debbie Dorian was a 22-year-old student at Fresno State. On August 22, 1996, she was found in her apartment with her wrists and ankles bound with tape. Tape also covered her head, including her mouth and nose. Her father discovered her when she did not show up for a planned trip. Investigators collected DNA at the scene.

The killing remained unsolved for decades. A series of sexual assaults in nearby Visalia shared a DNA profile with the Dorian scene. Genetic genealogy was later used to develop a suspect profile that reportedly led investigators to Nickey Duane Stane, a former resident of Visalia. Charges were followed then.

In 2019, DNA evidence linked Stane to multiple assaults in Visalia along with the 1996 Dorian homicide, officials said. He later pleaded guilty in May 2025 to a slate of counts that included murder and sexual assaults.

On June 12, 2025, a Fresno County judge sentenced him to life in prison without parole.

“He will pay for his evil actions,” Dorian’s mother, Sara Loven, said in court.

Victims from the Visalia cases described long-term trauma at sentencing. Prosecutors said the plea spared a death penalty trial and ensured Stane would never be released.
