Across eight episodes of Crutch season 1, widower Francois "Crutch" Crutchfield (Tracy Morgan) navigates the changes in the empty nest he's starting to enjoy when his two adult children and grandchildren move back into his home. It starts as a celebration when his son Jake (Jermaine Fowler) graduated from Columbia Law, and his daughter Jamilah (Adrianna Mitchell) and her kids visited.
But while thrilled to have his family back in his brownstone, learning that they are back in town not just for a visit but to stay there the entire summer dampens Crutch's spirit. Things get even trickier when Jake reveals that he left his high-paying corporate job to be a legal aid and pursue pro bono work, and Jamila's marriage is crumbling because of her husband's gambling addiction.
Throughout the series, the Crutchfields navigate what it's like living in the same house. The finale hinges on Crutch getting his alone time back with Jamilah, supposedly returning to Minnesota. However, it's not happening because Jamilah is staying in Harlem, especially after receiving a shocking envelope that will keep her and the kids in town longer, or even forever.

Why is Jamilah staying in Harlem at the end of Crutch season 1?

While Crutch has adjusted to living with both Jake and Jamilah and his grandkids, Lisa and Mase, throughout Crutch season 1, he's all too happy to get the place back to himself. While there's no question that Jake is staying or not, Jamilah is set to reconcile with her husband, Andrew, who has been in rehab. With Jamilah returning to Minnesota, he can finally rent out the upstairs apartment.
But there's another snag in Crutch's plan. It turns out that Jamilah and the kids are not returning to their home in Minnesota after all because they have to sell the house to pay off Andrew's gambling debts. It means she will be staying in the brownstone beyond the summer, which bums Crutch out, but he's still supportive of her and her kids and offers them the place to stay.
But needing to sell the house is not the only reason Jamilah will be staying in Harlem. At the end of the episode, she's served with divorce papers in front of the family. Andrew has decided to end their marriage after all, which means she has no reason to return to Minnesota because she no longer has a house or a husband to return to.

Does Crutch's barbecue party happen at the end of Crutch season 1?
Crutch season 1 starts with a celebration, and it also ends in one, with Crutch planning an elaborate family barbecue party with his brand-new smoker. Even Toni, Crutch's sharp-tongued sister-in-law, who works as a corrections officer, gets wrapped up in party planning. But preparations go bust when Crutch and his comic sidekick and store manager, Flaco, man the grill.

They fall asleep manning the smoker and don't realize that it has turned too hot until it's too late. The barbecue is burned, and with no food for the party that is happening soon, Crutch is bummed and can't see any reason to continue with the celebration. But he still has an old grill from years before, and instead of the brand-new smoker, they go old school.
It doesn't end as he envisioned at first, but the party ends up a success and a lot of fun. The Crutchfield wraps the party and the season with a family picture.
Crutch season 1 ending: Is Crutch finally moving on?
While Crutch is supportive of his son Jake's dating life, like the time he pretends to be Jake and texts someone to get Jake a date, he's not as proactive when it comes to his own love life. Crutch refuses to get on a date or even consider making a profile in an online dating app, even with his friends' help. Also, throughout the series, he's seen talking to his late wife's picture at home.
However, at the barbecue party, he seems smitten with a woman named Yvonne. Even Jake and Jamilah, who are closely watching their father's exchange with the woman, commented on Crutch and Yvonne flirting with each other. And while their interaction is short, Crutch ends up getting Yvonne's phone number along with a promise that he will contact her.
