Pop culture podcaster Perez Hilton reacted to Sydney Sweeney's latest interview with People magazine, in which she once again addressed the jeans ad controversy. For the context, in July this year, American Eagle featured the Christy alum in their ad campaign titled "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans." The campaign got flak from people, and many accused the ad of promoting eugenics.
The "Great Jeans" ad divided the people on the internet, and even the US President shared his opinion on it. He called the campaign,"Hottest ad out there." The support from the POTUS further politicized the issue. Last month, Sweeney gave an interview to GQ wherein the host asked if she wanted to address the controversy. At the time, the actress said, "The ad spoke for itself."
However, in a recent interview with People, published on December 5, Sydney Sweeney opened up on the controversy and said:
"I was honestly surprised by the reaction. I did it because I love the jeans and love the brand. I don’t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign. Many have assigned motives and labels to me that just aren’t true."
Perez Hilton discussed Sydney Sweeney's latest interview in his Saturday podcast episode. The pop culture commentator also shared his video on X on Sunday and commented:
"#SydneySweeney has been a MAGA darling. Is that about to change? Her jeans / genes ad is coming up yet again - only this time she’s singing a much different tune!"
In his podcast, Perez Hilton asserted that Sweeney was heralded "as a superstar in the MAGA movement" by many conservatives. He even noted how Megyn Kelly praised Sweeney's reaction when she didn't respond to the controversy in GQ's interview.
Referring to the recent interview of the Americana alum, Hilton took a swipe at MAGA supporters.
"I can hear MAGA folks having a meltdown over it. Right... Are you upset at her for not standing by her convictions or caving into pressure? I can fully imagine a wide range of reactions," Hilton stated.
"I'm against hate"- Sydney Sweeney addresses her silence on the controversy in the past
The actress did not issue any statement following the controversy surrounding her ad. When she appeared in GQ's interview, aired on November 4, the actress addressed the controversy just by saying:
"I think that when I have an issue that I wanna speak about, people will hear."
Now, in the December 5 exclusive, Sydney Sweeney told People that her silence on the controversy did not help. She acknowledged that it further divided the individuals.
"Anyone who knows me knows that I’m always trying to bring people together. I’m against hate and divisiveness. In the past my stance has been to never respond to negative or positive press but recently I have come to realize that my silence regarding this issue has only widened the divide, not closed it," Sydney Sweeney said.
She hoped that the new year would bring more focus on what connected people rather than on what divided them.
Sydney Sweeney has been actively promoting her upcoming film, The Housemaid. The adaptation of Freida McFadden's novel will hit theaters on December 19.
