Bryan Cranston recently opened up about his experience on How I Met Your Mother. The actor also joked about calling it a hit show when it wasn't at the time he joined it.
Bryan Cranston played the recurring role of Hammond Druthers on How I Met Your Mother. Druthers was the boss of Ted Mosby, played by Josh Radnor, and the former boss of Barney Stinson, played by Neil Patrick Harris. He appeared in numerous episodes over the course of the show's nine seasons.
Bryan Cranston appeared on the latest episode of How We Made Your Mother, a podcast by Josh Radnor and the show's co-creator, Craig Thomas. During the conversation, the Breaking Bad star told Thomas:
"I was free to do your show, which was lucky. [I was] able to spread my wings a little bit and take on a character that was so different from Hal on Malcolm in the Middle. Very grateful to be on a hit show like yours."
Thomas responded:
“We were not really a hit show yet."
Bryan Cranston then joked:
“Okay, I was just being kind.”
Thomas then asked the actor what made him say yes to How I Met Your Mother, to which he replied:
"One thing we always get asked, whether it’s How I Met Your Mother, whether it’s Breaking Bad, whatever the show you’re associated with or movie, the question we always get asked is, ‘Did you know it was going to be a hit? Did you know?’ No one ever knows. But what you do know and what I knew about How I Met Your Mother was that it was good."
Bryan Cranston appeared on How I Met Your Mother after his gig as Hal on Malcolm In The Middle and before his iconic role in Breaking Bad.
How I Met Your Mother is responsible for an iconic character in Bryan Cranston's Breaking Bad

Notably, an iconic character on Breaking Bad would have probably not existed if not for How I Met Your Mother. Bob Odenkirk played the role of Saul Goodman, a lawyer, on Breaking Bad, and garnered immense appreciation, which even led to his spinoff show, Better Call Saul.
However, Odenkirk also starred in How I Met Your Mother, playing the role of Arthur Hobbs, who was the boss of Marshall, played by Jason Segel. Hence, Odenkirk couldn't feature as often on Breaking Bad. Hence, the creators of the show introduced the character Mike Ehrmantraut, played by John Banks, to fill the gaps left by Saul Goodman.
In an interview on the Inside of You podcast, published on April 14, 2020, host Michael Rosenbaum asked Odenkirk:
“So he owes you, like, 10 percent of his money, right?”
The actor joked:
“No. I owe him.”
Mike was initially meant to be a small character, but fans loved him, and he became an important part of Breaking Bad. He played an even more prominent role in Better Call Saul.
