Amid the ongoing pre-trial hearing, prosecutors released bodycam footage showing officers’ first interaction with Luigi Mangione. The suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was arrested on December 9 last year. Exactly one year after the arrest, the footage was released in which cops could be seen entering the McDonald's in Pennsylvania, where Mangione was arrested.

Brian Thompson was killed in a shooting on a Manhattan sidewalk on December 4 last year. Following a five-day manhunt, Mangione was arrested after authorities received a call from the McDonald's manager. As per CNN, the manager told the operator that a man was present at the restaurant who many other customers doubted was a suspect in Thompson's killing. The manager who called 911 said:

“I have a customer here that some other customers were suspicious of – that he looks like the CEO shooter from New York."

The manager further told cops that only the suspect's eyebrows were visible.

On Tuesday, prosecutors released body camera footage that showed what unfolded next. In the body cam footage, an officer could be seen approaching a man sitting alone, wearing a beanie and a surgical face mask. The officer could be heard asking for the man's Identification. The man identified himself to cops as Mark Rosario and presented a New Jersey ID.

Luigi Mangione appeared composed during his interaction with the cops. While asking for the ID, one officer said,

"Someone called, they thought you were suspicious."

Luigi Mangione responded,

"Oh, I'm sorry."

The ID that Brian Thompson's suspected murderer handed over turned out to be fake, and he was eventually arrested.

Luigi Mangione was charged with second-degree murder, along with eight other state charges. He also faced federal charges for which prosecutors sought the death penalty. However, in September this year, a judge dismissed the state terrorism-related murder charge. Mangione has not pleaded guilty to any charges.

As per The Guardian, after Luigi Mangione was handcuffed, an officer searched his backpack and found a loaded magazine wrapped in an undergarment. The officers also discovered a 9mm handgun, which the prosecution believed was used in the murder. As per the BBC, there was also a notebook that included the text,

"The deadly, greed fueled health insurance cartel".

However, Luigi Mangione's lawyers disputed the admissibility of this evidence in court. Mangione's attorney argued that the officer combed the backpack without a search warrant.

During the pre-trial hearing on Tuesday, police officer Stephen Fox appeared in court. Fox conducted the search after Mangione was arrested. Footage from the arrest was played in court. He could be heard saying, "search incident to arrest." As per ABC News, this phrase allows cops to search anyone during an arrest in Pennsylvania.

In his testimony, the officer told the judge that he suspected a weapon inside the suspect's backpack.

"I felt uneasy based on the way he was sitting there. He wasn’t making eye contact. This was most likely the New York shooter we were dealing with. I wanted to make sure he was clear of any weapons," the officer stated on the witness stand.

A trial date has yet to be decided. When Luigi Mangione appeared on the first day of his pre-trial, many of his supporters gathered outside the court. Following the arrest last year, thousands of Mangione's supporters raised funds for him to cover his legal expenses.
