Meghan Markle's estranged father, Thomas Markle, has suffered a leg amputation following surgery. The Duchess of Sussex's half-brother exclusively shared about his father's leg amputation with the Daily Mail on Friday. However, no statement or social media post came from Meghan Markle at the time. The Duchess and her father have not been on talking terms since 2018.
Pop culture podcaster Perez Hilton discussed Thomas Markle's health condition and the Duchess's reported response to it in his November 5 podcast. Hilton reported that the Suits alum extended an olive branch as she reached out to her father amid the medical condition. Meghan Markle's representative issued a statement and said:
"I can confirm she has reached out to her father."
In his video, Perez Hilton remarked that the statement did not necessarily mean that she and her father had spoken.
"That's very carefully worded. That doesn't mean that she and her dad have spoken, but like I said at the beginning, she has extended an olive branch," Hilton commented.
However, Perez Hilton deemed it a "good thing," especially because the Duchess and her father had a good relationship before their fallout. The podcaster hoped that the "life-or-death situation" would become a "real conciliation."
In this statement to the Daily Mail, Thomas Markle's son urged the Duchess to show "compassion."
"I would appeal to Megan to show him compassion at this very difficult time," Markle's son stated.
For the unversed, the Duchess became infuriated with her dad just before her royal wedding in 2018. Thomas Markle reportedly posed for paparazzi in exchange for money before his daughter's wedding. Meghan Markle voiced her resentment in Netflix's docuseries Harry & Meghan.
Earlier in 2021, during an interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Duchess claimed that her father had lied about working with tabloids. She noted that she felt betrayed by his actions.
However, Thomas Markle could not attend his daughter's wedding, as he had suffered a stroke before it. As per the Daily Mail, it was King Charles who walked the Sussex partway down the aisle.
More about Meghan Markle's father's health condition
The former lighting and photography director, Thomas Markle, underwent surgery on Wednesday in the Philippines. The surgeons had to amputate the leg because it had turned black after circulation was cut off by a blood clot. Thomas Markle Jr. informed about the leg amputation to the Daily Mail on December 5.
"My dad is being very brave. His foot turned blue and then black. It happened very quickly. I took him to a local hospital and they did some scans and an ultrasound and said the leg had to be amputated. There was no option. I was told the leg had to be removed and it was a case of life or death." Markle's son shared.
He further told the outlet that the left leg was removed below the knee as there was a risk of sepsis or gangrene. He added that the next two to three days would be critical for his father.
Meghan Markle's father earlier lost his speech after suffering a stroke in 2022. However, he later partially regained the ability to speak.
As per the Daily Mail, Meghan Markle's father shifted to the Philippines in January this year. Talking to the publication, he stated that in the US and Mexico, he was "constantly reminded" of his estrangement from Meghan Markle.
