Elon Musk has claimed that he is hesitant about making public appearances after Charlie Kirk's death. He said that he avoids making such appearances because it only takes one mistake for something to go wrong.
Charlie Kirk was assassinated on September 10 this year, having been shot during an event at Utah Valley University. He was speaking and interacting with the audience in an open area in the university when he was shot.
Elon Musk spoke about Kirk's death in an interview on the Katie Miller Pod podcast, released on Tuesday, December 9. He said:
“There are serious security issues. It’s not that I don’t want to [make public appearances]. I simply can’t. [Charlie’s assassination] has reinforced the severity of the situation, where, life is on hardcore mode. You make one mistake, you’re dead. It only takes one mistake.”
Notably, Musk attended Kirk's memorial in Arizona on September 21 and appeared to reunite with Donald Trump, with whom he had a falling out earlier this year.
When Elon Musk shared reason behind Charlie Kirk's assassination

The Tesla founder has spoken about Charlie Kirk's assassination a few times in the past. As he attended the late podcaster's memorial, he said that his words were impactful, which eventually led to his death. He said:
"He was killed because his words made a difference. Because he was showing people the light. And he was killed by the dark."
Meanwhile, in a conversation with Tommy Robinson on September 13, Elon Musk had said:
“You see how much violence there's on the left with our friend Charlie Kirk getting murdered in cold blood this week and people on the left celebrating it openly, the left is the party of murder and celebrating murder. Let that sink in for a minute. That's who we're dealing with here. That is who we're dealing with.”
Musk has also previously urged people to support Turning Point USA, a nonprofit organization founded by Charlie Kirk.
Notably, a man named Tyler Robinson has been arrested for allegedly shooting Kirk. His trial is set to commence in January 2026.
Elon Musk isn't the only one to have security concerns after Charlie Kirk's death
Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy claimed last month that his awareness of security, especially at his house, has increased after Kirk's death. He said that his name is mentioned on social media, due to which he has increased security in his surroundings.
Portnoy said (h/t Bro Bible):
“I don’t even know what they’re saying, but they start talking about me, trying to get my name because they’re just in this endless cycle of needing to stay in the news, but they start talking about me, mention my name, they’ll open the floodgates on just lunatics, and it only takes one, so yeah I had security at my house 24/7.”
Notably, Barstool fired an intern in September after he posted a condolence message for Kirk from one of the brand's pages. Dave Portnoy later backed the decision, writing a post on X (formerly Twitter), explaining their no politics policy on their brand pages.
