American blogger and columnist Perez Hilton recently shared his reaction after reports emerged that the family of Ronan Kerr, a four-year-old boy who tragically lost his life earlier this year, is suing San Diego by filing a wrongful death lawsuit.According to The Daily Mail, Ronan Kerr was killed in front of his father after a eucalyptus branch fell on him while playing in Villa La Jolla Park in San Diego. As per a GoFundMe organized for his family, the boy was struck on the head by a “large” piece of a eucalyptus tree in June 2025.After his family filed a lawsuit alleging the trees had been doomed for decades, Perez Hilton took to his blog and shared his thoughts on the incident. On November 12, 2025, the 47-year-old media personality wrote:“What a heartbreaking incident. We hope nothing like this EVER happens again.”In his blog, Perez Hilton cited the wrongful death lawsuit filed by his family and mentioned that Ronan Kerr was playing with his father, Cathal Kerr, and his seven-year-old older brother, Charlie, when the 34-foot-long branch snapped off 60 feet above them. While the father tried to grab both of his sons, he could not save Ronan Kerr in time.Meanwhile, the young boy was rushed to Rady’s Children Hospital. Ronan Kerr tragically died from sustaining life-threatening injuries, including facial lacerations, multiple broken bones, and a traumatic brain injury, at the hospital seven days later.Perez Hilton says the family of Ronan Kerr is holding San Diego responsible for his deathIn his Wednesday blog, Perez Hilton also detailed the lawsuit, which was filed by the Kerr family this week. The family accused the city of failing to maintain trees in the area, and specifically named two contractors, adding:“The tree’s branches and limbs were large, elongated, heavy, angled and improperly maintained to the point that it was obvious to a trained eye that the tree would catastrophically fail.”While the family of Ronan Kerr claimed the tree from which the branch fell was unhealthy and had deadwood, the suit also lists over 30 instances between 1983 and 2005 of tree branches and eucalyptus trees falling in the city.“Eucalyptus trees in San Diego parks were posing significant dangers to the public. The city’s inspection and maintenance protocols were grossly inadequate to identify hazardous trees before they failed.”Meanwhile, the suit also included an instance of a 4-year-old girl who was killed in ‘83 at the entrance of the San Diego Zoo. According to Perez Hilton, the family is seeking both financial damages and demanding that all eucalyptus trees be inspected, with any deemed dead or damaged trees be maintained or removed. In an obituary, the family said that Ronan taught them “about joy, resilience, tenderness”, and how deeply a child can love, adding:“His hugs, his giggles, the way he melted into you when he snuggled — these are the things that will echo forever in the hearts of those who loved him. Ronan may have only been here for 4.5 years, but he lived with a presence that felt bigger than life.”For the unversed, the family of Ronan Kerr reportedly wants all assessments to be made public on the city’s official website.
