Following this, a biological female athlete on the team announced her decision to resign from the team to showcase her protest.

Earlier, seven transgender athletes competed on women’s hockey teams in Minnesota. In October 2021, the national governing body of the sport, USA Hockey, implemented a policy allowing individuals to compete in accordance with their gender identity. It requires a trans-athlete to self-identify as a woman and register with USA Hockey. The policy also directs the coaches and officials to educate themselves on the issues of diversity.

After the four transgender athletes were allowed to compete on the Minnesota women's team, Gaines, an advocate for women's rights and safety in sports, slammed the decision and wrote:

She further threw in a taunt at the situation and added:

In Minnesota, the Women’s Hockey Association of Minnesota (WHAM) governs the sport while following the guidelines instructed by USA Hockey.

Riley Gaines recently reacted to the International Olympic Committee's plan to impose a ban on transgender athletes from competing in women's sports at the Games. Keeping the 2024 Paris Games in sight, she also suggested that the IOC should strip Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-Ting of their medals.

"Back to the 2024 Olympics, in the sport of women's boxing, you know the sport where the goal, the intention, is to knock your opponent unconscious by physically pummeling them in the face. There was a male, actually two males, who won gold medals in their respective weight categories in the women's division. Both of these athletes have been proven to be male by their medical records. Yet, they still have their gold medal."

She added:

"I think the next step in accountability and transparency is the IOC ultimately stripping both of these athletes of their gold medals and giving them to the rightful female winner, and issuing a personalized apology to every female athlete they failed in the process."

Earlier, the IOC allowed the individual sports federations to make decisions for transgender athletes.
