"The sport owes you nothing"- Josh Kerr shares strong message months after World Championships heartbreak

Josh Kerr faced an unexpected loss at the 2025 World Championships, sustaining an injury in his right calf muscle. The Scot has shared a strong message on social media months after this heartbreak.

Kerr competed in the 1500m final on September 17, 2025, at the National Stadium in Tokyo. He sustained a grade two tear in his right calf muscle while competing. However, he still completed the race and crossed the finish line last. He was seen limping during the race, and forced himself to finish the race in 4:11.23.

The gold medal was claimed by Portugal's Isaac Nader. The silver and bronze medals were won by Jake Wightman and Reynold Cheruiyot. Months after this heartbreak, Kerr shared a strong message in a video on Instagram. The Scot was seen training in his gym and saying:

"The sport owes you nothing. You gotta go out and take what's yours," said Josh Kerr.

In 2025 Kerr initially announced his opening event to be the Wanamaker Mile; however, he pulled out due to illness. Following this, he competed in the GST's Kingston Slam, where he earned the seventh position overall in the short-distance event, which included the 1500m and 800m.

In the Miami Slam, he won the 1500m race by clocking 3:34.51 and finished fifth in the 800m. He faced the same fate in the Philadelphia Slam, where he stood atop the podium in the 1500m after recording 3:34.44 and ended up in fifth place in the 800m.

In addition to this, he earned a second-place finish in the 1500m at the London Athletics meet. He also became the British 5000m champion after winning the race at the UK Athletics Championships.


Josh Kerr opened up about his 2025 World Championships upset

Days after his loss at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Josh Kerr reflected on his performance and the injury he sustained in the 1500m race. Admitting that some things are out of his hands, he expressed gratitude for all the championships he came out healthy. He further added that he would embrace this chapter of his life and said:

"I've always prided myself on optimizing every detail I can control. But the reality of this sport is that some things are out of our hands. I’m grateful for how many championships I’ve been able to come into healthy and ready to compete. I can’t be too disappointed giving myself the chance to line up in another World final. Embracing this chapter of my career and excited to share what’s ahead as we work our way back to the top," said Josh Kerr.

Ahead of competing in the World Championships, Josh Kerr shared a message after his rival Jakob Ingebrigtsen announced his return to the World Championships.
